Therapy for Infertility & Reproductive Loss
Trauma doesn’t just live in your memories; it lives in your body, your reactions, and the way you move through the world. Whether you experienced a single traumatic event or endured ongoing difficult experiences, you deserve compassionate, expert care that helps you reclaim your sense of safety and peace.
At Storywell Counseling, we specialize in trauma therapy using evidence-based approaches that actually work. We understand that trauma isn’t something you can just “get over,” and we’re here to walk alongside you as you heal at your own pace.
What is Trauma?
Trauma is your mind and body’s response to experiences that felt overwhelming, dangerous, or life-threatening. It’s not about what happened to you—it’s about how those experiences affected you.
Trauma can come from many different experiences:
∙Physical, emotional, or sexual abuse
∙Accidents or serious injuries
∙Medical procedures or chronic illness
∙Witnessing violence or death
∙Natural disasters
∙Combat or military service
∙Childhood neglect or abandonment
∙Sudden loss of a loved one
∙Domestic violence or intimate partner abuse
∙Assault or violent crime
Sometimes trauma comes from a single incident. Other times it develops from repeated experiences over months or years. Both are real, both are valid, and both deserve care and attention.
How We Treat Trauma at Storywell Counseling
Healing from trauma isn’t about forgetting what happened or just “moving on.” It’s about processing those experiences so they no longer control your present, and building the inner resources you need to feel safe and empowered again.
Trauma can make you feel isolated and alone, like no one could possibly understand what you’re going through. But you don’t have to heal by yourself.
At Storywell Counseling, our therapists are specifically trained in trauma treatment. We’ve helped many people work through experiences similar to yours, and we know what actually works. More importantly, we believe in your capacity to heal—even on days when you don’t believe it yourself.
What Makes Our Trauma Therapy Different
We’re not afraid of your pain. Whatever you’ve been through, whatever you’re feeling, we can handle it. You don’t have to protect us or downplay your experiences.
We go at your pace. Healing can’t be rushed. We’ll never push you faster than feels safe, and we’ll never judge you for needing more time.
We focus on empowerment. You’re not broken and you don’t need to be fixed. Trauma therapy is about reclaiming your power and building on the strength you already have.
We use what works. We’re trained in evidence-based approaches proven to help with trauma and PTSD. This isn’t just talk therapy, these are specific techniques designed to help your brain heal.
We offer flexible options. Whether you prefer in-person sessions at our Westerville office or the privacy and comfort of telehealth, we provide the same expert care.
Frequently Asked Questions About Trauma Therapy
Do I have to talk about all the details of what happened to me?
No. Especially with EMDR, you can heal from traumatic experiences without having to verbally recount every detail. You share only what you’re comfortable sharing, and your therapist will never pressure you to discuss things you’re not ready to address.
What if I start therapy and it gets too overwhelming?
Your therapist will teach you grounding and calming techniques from the very first session. You’ll have tools to manage distress, and you can always take breaks, slow down, or pause the work entirely if you need to. You’re in control.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Everyone’s healing timeline is different. Some people notice significant improvement in a few months, while others need a year or more. Complex trauma that occurred over many years typically takes longer to process than a single traumatic incident. Your therapist will work with you to develop a treatment plan that fits your needs.
Will I ever be “normal” again?
Trauma changes you, there’s no denying that. But therapy isn’t about going back to who you were before. It’s about integrating what happened and becoming a version of yourself who is stronger, wiser, and more resilient. Many people find that after healing from trauma, they have a deeper appreciation for life, stronger boundaries, and greater compassion for themselves and others.
What if I’m not sure my experience “counts” as trauma?
If something deeply affected you, it matters—period. There’s no minimum threshold for deserving help. Whether your trauma feels “big” or “small” compared to others’ experiences is irrelevant. What matters is how it’s impacting your life now.
Can trauma therapy make things worse?
Good trauma therapy, delivered by a trained professional, should not make things worse. You might feel temporarily uncomfortable as you process difficult material, but this is different from being retraumatized. Our therapists are specifically trained to help you heal without overwhelming your nervous system.
