Life Transitions
We walk through life changes with you.
At Storywell Counseling, we help you navigate life’s transitions with support, clarity, and tools to not just survive the change, but to find meaning, growth, and new possibilities within it.
-
Transitions often bring contradictory emotions, in therapy, you don’t have to pick one feeling or pretend you’re handling it better than you are. We create space for all of it: the ambivalence, the doubt, the moments when you wonder if you’ve made a terrible mistake, and the moments when you feel hopeful about what’s ahead.
-
We help you make sense of why this transition feels so hard. You’ll understand how major changes affect your nervous system and sense of identity, why even wanted changes can be destabilizing, what you’re actually grieving (roles, routines, relationships, or dreams), and that your struggle doesn’t mean you made the wrong choice.
-
Transitions force you to reconsider what’s important. We help you identify your core values: what truly matters to you beyond external expectations, recognize which parts of your old life you want to carry forward and which you’re ready to release, make decisions aligned with who you’re becoming rather than who you were, and build a vision for this next chapter that feels authentic and meaningful.
-
We teach you concrete tools for managing the stress and uncertainty of transitions: techniques for tolerating ambiguity when you can’t see the path ahead, ways to ground yourself when everything feels unstable, strategies for managing anxiety about the future, self-compassion practices for the difficult adjustment period, and methods for creating new routines and structure when your old ones no longer fit.
-
Most transitions involve loss, even when the change is positive. We honor what you’re leaving behind: the person you were, the life you had, the dreams that no longer fit, while also helping you open to new possibilities.
-
“Who am I now?” is one of the most important questions in a transition. We help you explore who you’re becoming when old roles and identities no longer apply, discover new aspects of yourself that emerge during change, integrate your past self with who you’re becoming, and build confidence in your ability to adapt and grow.
Life Transitions Counseling
Life transitions counseling provides support during periods of significant change in your life. These transitions can be planned or unexpected, exciting or devastating, singular events or ongoing shifts and they all have one thing in common: they require you to adapt to a new reality. Even positive transitions can be stressful. Getting married, having a baby, or retiring are all wonderful and also require enormous adjustment. There’s no “wrong” reason to need support during change.

What Makes Our Life Transitions Therapy Different
We honor both the loss and the possibility. Transitions aren’t just about moving forward, they’re about acknowledging what you’re leaving behind. We make space for grief, fear, and ambivalence alongside hope and excitement.
We don’t rush you toward “closure.” Our culture pressures people to adjust quickly and move on. We let you take the time you need to process change at your own pace.
We work with ambivalence. You don’t have to be certain about your transition or feel one clear way about it. We help you sit with mixed feelings and make decisions even when you’re not 100% sure.
We recognize that growth isn’t always comfortable. Personal growth and positive change can still feel scary and destabilizing. We normalize the discomfort that often comes with transitions, even wanted ones.
We help you find practical footing. Alongside the emotional and identity work, we help you develop concrete strategies for managing your new reality: new routines, new social connections, new ways of spending time.
We celebrate your courage. Whether you chose this transition or it was thrust upon you, navigating significant life change takes enormous courage. We see that and honor it.

Frequently Asked Questions about Life Transitions
Still have questions? Take a look at the FAQ or reach out for a free 15-minute consultation.
-
Life transitions include any significant change that disrupts your normal routine or sense of identity: career changes (new job, retirement, job loss), relationship changes (marriage, divorce, breakup), becoming a parent, children leaving home, moving to a new city, health diagnoses, loss of a loved one, graduating from school, or reaching milestone ages. Even positive transitions like promotions or marriage can be stressful. If you’re struggling to adapt, feeling overwhelmed, or questioning your identity during a major life change, therapy can help.
-
Life transition counseling is often shorter-term and more focused than ongoing therapy. It specifically addresses the challenges of navigating change, adjusting to a new normal, and developing coping strategies for the transition period. Your therapist will help you process the loss of what was, manage the uncertainty of change, develop new skills or perspectives, and create meaning in your new circumstances. Many people use transition counseling as needed support during specific changes rather than long-term treatment.
-
Absolutely. Even positive, chosen transitions involve loss of the familiar and uncertainty about the future. It’s normal to feel: grief for what you’re leaving behind, anxiety about the unknown, questioning of your identity or decisions, overwhelm about all the changes, or even excitement mixed with fear. These feelings don’t mean you made the wrong choice, they’re a natural response to change. Therapy helps you navigate these emotions while building resilience and confidence.
-
Career transition therapy addresses both practical and emotional challenges: processing feelings about job loss, rejection, or retirement; rebuilding confidence and self-worth beyond your job title; exploring your values and what you want next; managing financial stress and uncertainty; developing job search strategies; and adjusting to a new workplace culture or role. Losing a job or changing careers can feel like losing part of your identity. Therapy helps you rediscover who you are beyond your professional role.
-
Yes, therapy is very effective for empty nest transitions. When children leave home, parents often experience: loss of daily purpose and routine, grief over the end of active parenting, questioning of identity beyond “parent,” relationship changes with their partner, and feelings of loneliness or purposelessness. Therapy helps you redefine your identity, strengthen your relationship with your partner, discover new interests and purposes, and adjust to your new relationship with your adult children.
-
Adjustment timelines vary widely depending on the type of transition and your personal circumstances. Generally, expect 3-12 months to feel settled in most transitions, though some (like grief or divorce) may take longer. Therapy can significantly shorten adjustment time by providing coping strategies, preventing unhealthy patterns, and helping you actively navigate the change rather than just enduring it. The goal isn’t to rush the process but to move through it with support and intention.
