Anxiety & Depression

We Treat Anxiety & Depression with Effective Therapeutic Approaches

At Storywell Counseling, we don’t only create a safe, authentic, and easy going space for you to share your thoughts and feelings. We also use treatments for anxiety & depression that are grounded in scientific research and lead to real lasting change.

  • CBT is one of the most researched and effective treatments for both anxiety and depression. It helps you identify negative thought patterns that fuel symptoms and learn to challenge these thoughts and develop more balanced perspectives. CBT provides concrete coping strategies you can use immediately and helps you practice new ways of responding to difficult situations.

  • ACT helps you develop a different relationship with anxious or depressive thoughts and feelings. Instead of fighting them or trying to make them go away, you learn to acknowledge them without letting them control your life. ACT focuses on accepting difficult emotions rather than struggling against them, being present in the moment instead of lost in worry or rumination, clarifying your personal values and taking committed action toward those values even when anxiety or depression show up. You’ll develop psychological flexibility and resilience.

  • When anxiety or depression stems from past trauma, difficult experiences, or persistent negative beliefs about yourself, EMDR can help. It addresses the root experiences that created these patterns, not just the current symptoms. EMDR is particularly helpful for symptoms rooted in trauma, persistent negative beliefs like “I’m not good enough” or “I’m unsafe,” specific triggering memories that fuel current struggles, and processing difficult experiences that contribute to symptoms.

  • We teach practical skills for managing anxiety and depression in the moment such as breathing exercises that calm your nervous system, grounding techniques to pull you out of panic or overwhelming thoughts, mindfulness practices to help you stay present, progressive muscle relaxation, and self-compassion exercises.

  • Depression & anxiety often lead to withdrawal and inactivity, which makes symptoms worse. Behavioral activation helps you gradually re-engage with activities and people that bring meaning or pleasure, even when you don’t feel like it. Small actions can create positive momentum.

These are just some of the evidenced-based approaches we use to treat anxiety & depression. Our approach is tailored specifically to the needs of each client and we work collaboratively with clients so that every person feels confident they are getting the help they are looking for.

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is more than just stress; it’s persistent, often disproportionate worry that interferes with daily life, affecting your thoughts, emotions, physical body, and behavior.

What is Depression?

Depression isn’t just sadness; it’s a persistent low mood affecting every aspect of life. It’s not weakness or something you can “snap out of.”

What Makes Our Anxiety & Depression Therapy Different

We use approaches proven to work. CBT, ACT, EMDR and the other therapies we use have decades of research showing they effectively treat anxiety and depression. This isn’t just talking, these are specific techniques that create real change.

We give you tools you can use immediately. You’ll leave each session with practical strategies you can apply right away when anxiety spikes or depression weighs you down.

We address root causes, not just symptoms. While we help you manage current symptoms, we also work to understand and address what’s driving your anxiety or depression so you can experience lasting change.

We tailor treatment to you. Anxiety and depression look different for everyone. We adapt our approach to your specific symptoms, learning style, and what resonates with you.

We normalize your experience. Anxiety and depression are medical conditions, not character flaws. We help you understand what’s happening in your brain and body, which reduces shame and helps you approach treatment with self-compassion rather than self-criticism.

We work at your pace. Some people want to dive deep quickly; others need to go slowly. We respect your comfort level and never push you faster than feels right.

We celebrate progress. Recovery isn’t linear. We help you recognize and celebrate small improvements, even when you still have hard days.

Frequently Asked Questions about Anxiety & Depression

Still have questions? Take a look at the FAQ or reach out for a free 15-minute consultation.

  • Everyone experiences stress, but anxiety disorder involves excessive worry that’s difficult to control and interferes with daily life. Signs of an anxiety disorder include: worrying about many different things most days for at least 6 months, physical symptoms like racing heart, muscle tension, or difficulty breathing, avoiding situations due to fear or worry, difficulty concentrating, sleep problems, and feeling restless or on edge. If anxiety is preventing you from doing things you want or need to do, or if you’re spending excessive time worrying, it’s worth seeking professional help.

  • Sadness is a normal emotion that comes and goes, usually in response to specific situations. Clinical depression is a persistent low mood that lasts most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks. Depression symptoms include: loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy, changes in appetite or sleep, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, and thoughts of death or suicide. Depression is a medical condition that affects your brain chemistry and requires treatment, it’s not something you can just “snap out of.”

  • Many people notice some improvement within 4-8 weeks of starting therapy, though full treatment typically takes 12-20 sessions for anxiety and depression. The exact timeline depends on the severity of symptoms, how long you’ve been experiencing them, and what type of therapy you’re receiving. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) are evidence-based approaches that often show results relatively quickly. Your therapist will work with you to set goals and track progress throughout treatment.

  • Not everyone with anxiety or depression needs medication. Therapy alone is effective for many people, especially with mild to moderate symptoms. For moderate to severe anxiety or depression, a combination of therapy and medication often works best. Your therapist can help you assess whether medication might be helpful and refer you to a psychiatrist or primary care provider if appropriate. The decision to use medication is always yours to make in consultation with your healthcare providers.

  • Your first session focuses on getting to know you and understanding what brought you to therapy. Your therapist will ask about your symptoms, when they started, what makes them better or worse, your personal and family mental health history, and your goals for therapy. You’ll also discuss what to expect from the therapeutic process and may start learning some initial coping strategies. The first session is collaborative. You’re interviewing the therapist as much as they’re assessing you to ensure it’s a good fit.

  • While symptoms may temporarily improve on their own, untreated anxiety and depression typically persist or worsen over time. Without treatment, these conditions can significantly impact your relationships, work, physical health, and quality of life. The good news is that anxiety and depression are highly treatable - about 80% of people who seek treatment experience significant improvement. Early intervention often leads to faster recovery and better long-term outcomes.
